Debutanting is the embrace of young, beautiful, stylish women’s lifestyles, with all the fun excesses and hedonism that entails.
Debutanting is all about having a great time and looking good doing it. It’s a competition, in that way that life is a competition, where the goal is to have as much fun as possible. This being the 21st century, it’s also about documenting that fun. Debutanting isn’t all about selfies and brunch, but it’s not not about selfies and bruch. Ultimately, there is more to life than getting drunk with your best friends and having a wild Saturday night…but not while you’re still a debutante.
For a good minute, we thought that debutanting was a word that we’d coined ourselves. It popped into our head followed by the opinion “Oh, that’s fun”, and then, “I wonder if anyone else has ever used it.” Less then a minute later, we googled “Debutanting” only to discover about 700 incidents of the word, most of which were used in print between the 1920s to the 1960s.
A debutante or deb (from the French débutante, “female beginner”) is a girl or young woman of an aristocratic or upper-class family who has reached maturity and, as a new adult, comes out into society at a formal “debut”.
There do exist formal debutante societies and literal debutantes, but that’s not really what we’re examining here. No, here it’s more…cruel.
Also, more fun. Just the kind of fun that you might have some regrets about later. Our goal in life is to get kicked out of the world’s most exclusive parties.
